Our story
About Us
Founded 1 March 1980 — one of the earliest Filipino organisations and among the oldest UP alumni chapters outside the Philippines.
The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Australia – New South Wales Chapter (UPAAA-NSW) was established on 1 March 1980 by founding members Victor Pulmano, Elizabeth (Beth) Leroux, Evelyn Liquete, and others. It remains one of the oldest UP alumni chapters operating outside the Philippines.
Our objectives
- Support the University of the Philippines' academic mission.
- Assist the development and welfare of alumni in Australia.
- Foster sociocultural exchange between the Filipino and Australian communities.
Our guiding motto: “Unity, Community and Loyalty.”
What we've achieved
Recognition of Philippine qualifications
UPAAA-NSW spent a decade lobbying federal and NSW governments to recognise Philippine academic qualifications. This effort helped standardise skills assessment and assisted overseas-trained doctors in gaining medical registration in Australia.
The scholarship program
Established in 1982, our flagship scholarship supports academically deserving Filipino students at UP, covering tuition, stipends, and allowances. Learn about the program →
Cultural programs
We have hosted performances by UP musical groups and conducted seminars on Philippine arts and culture.
Charitable work
The association has donated to orphanages, schools, and disaster-relief efforts in the Philippines, including support following the 2013 earthquakes and Typhoon Yolanda.
Recognition
UPAAA-NSW received the “Distinguished Service Award” from the UP Alumni Association in 2011, and established its own Outstanding Alumni Achievement Awards in 2008.
